This is why you need to know everything about your clients

Isn’t it true, that in most cases, we as interior designers, we know better what our clients really need? Instead of what they tell us what they want. That’s our speciality, right? That’s our pride! This is where our clients say,: “How did you know that? How did you do that?”

So, this means you don’t always have to exactly do what your clients asked you to do. You shouldn’t! But we need to do it strategically, gentle and with purpose. Not by impressing with your design. Certainly not by pushing it. Otherwise we’ll become that arrogant, selfish designer in the eyes of our client. And that’s not who we are right? There is a certain way to do this that makes your clients trust you and follow your lead.

TIP: If you want to be the answer to your clients problems, you need to ask them the RIGHT questions first. This way you are able to serve them the best way that’s possible. You become their only solution.

However, many interior designers are just showing their design skills to potential clients. Like: “Look at this beautiful design!” Especially at the first meeting, ‘showing off’ with their portfolio.

I’m guilty! This was how I was trying to get the deal. I know it’s hard to ‘not’ do that, because we are so proud of our work.

Actually it is really weird, isn’t it? You may think you’re helping both ends: your potential client with insights, ideas and inspiration as well as showing you’re a good fit: you made some solid designs. But in fact, they don’t care! They do like your work, and they like to look at beautiful designs, but they don’t care. Because what you are doing is…

You are talking about ‘you’, while it’s all about ‘them’!  They want to know whats’s in it for ‘them’. And that is not done by showing off with your design skills.
